In Focus is a new series that aims to shine a light on the areas Warren Powell-Richards serves, directly from those who live there. For the first feature we’re focussing on Liphook. So, as Kyle Nelson-Esch, our Director of Lettings, lives there, let’s find out what he has to say about a village packed full of history, scenery and attractions.
When it’s time for a pint …
I’ll venture out to The Deer’s Hut on Longmoor Road. It’s a lovely pub with a great atmosphere. It’s also a free house, which I really like. It’s always packed with a diverse mix of people from all walks of life including families, which suits my wife and our 15-month-old son very nicely. Not only that, but it’s close to Longmoor Range, so ideally situated if you fancy a pre-drink or post-drink walk.
The best place to eat out is …
Without doubt, it has to be a pizza place called Guidos on Station Road. The owner was brought up on the family wine farm in Tuscany, and his mother is the Nigella Lawson of Italy. He moved to the UK and decided to open a pizza place in Liphook. Other members of his family own vineyards in Italy, too. But this place, hands down, serves the best pizza I’ve had in the UK. My wife and I go to Italy quite often – we even honeymooned there – and the pizzas here are on par with what you’ll find in Italy.
When it’s time for some fresh air …
Well, I run a lot. With Longmoor Range and Woolmer Forest being so close, both of which are split by the A3, I’m spoilt for choice. Sometimes, I’ll even do a Park Run at the Hogmoor Inclosure at Bordon. Café Hogmoor, the onsite café, sells a fantastic banana bread. We’ll sometimes head out further afield and take our son to Sky Park Farm in West Harting. The head butcher there is South African, like me, and in the summer months he’ll cook outside. They have the most incredible children’s play area, which my son loves. If we’re staying local, then Liphook’s recreational ground is very good. As is Beacon Hill in Grayshott.
Liphook’s hidden gems are …
The Living Room! It’s an independent cinema that doesn’t just show mainstream movies, but also independents, too. It only has one screen, but it regularly rotates its films. You can also dine and have drinks whilst watching a film. Even if you don’t want to watch a film, you can grab a cocktail (they often have special deals on) or work out of there with a coffee. In a village of only 6,000 people, it’s really special to have a cinema – and really nice for residents to not have to make the journey to Guildford just to see a film.
My wife and I like our wine and whisky, so we always enjoy a visit to the General Wine Company. Its selection of wines from around the world is incredible, and the whisky collection is pretty impressive, too. They also stock cigars, which I’m occasionally partial to, and there’s always plenty to choose from.
Another gem is Little Fish, a fantastic sushi place where the food is made by the team at their headquarters on Station Road. We’re big sushi fans, so much so that we were initially worried about moving from London to Liphook on the basis that we wouldn’t be able to get our sushi fix. However, thanks to Little Fish, which covers almost all of Surrey and Hampshire, we never go without.
The Liphook Carnival, which takes place every year, is a real treat to watch. As is the Tractor Festival, which makes its way through Liphook with a wide selection of tractors to see, some of which are decked in Christmas lights. Last year we had 70 tractors and the turnout’s great. Although my son’s very young, he absolutely loved it.
